Top 3 iPod Alternatives

Posted November 3, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

iPod may be the best media player out there. But many may not be able to afford to buy it because of its cost. There are alternatives for everything including the iPod. These alternatives provide a good competition to the iPod. Though not first in the market, these competitors too have a good market share from a loyal fan base.

So let us stop with the introductions and see about the alternatives.

Top 3 iPod Alternatives

1. Microsoft Zune

Zune is Microsoft’s competitor for the iPod. Zune was expected to be an iPod Killer, but it never achieved that stage. But, even then Zune is the most complete iPod alternative available in the market. Zune is a product for the Microsoft fan boy (!).

Zune has an FM Receiver which the iPod lacks, Zune also has HD version that gives a good competition for the iPod Touch. The Zune Desktop application will help you to manage music as effectively as iTunes. It also has Wi-Fi so that you can share your music. It also syncs with your PC, and XBox so that your whole Microsoft family stay connected.

2. Creative Zen

I like Zen very much personally. They are easy to use and have a wide range of storage capacity from 2-32 GB and also support SD cards, so that you can extend your memory.

The Zen Players are reasonably priced and have FM and other common features. The Zen also comes in various variants including one with a touch interface. It also comes with the Creative Centrale suite, which helps you to manage your music library. The Zen is worth every bucks you pay.

3. Sony Walkman

The name says it all. Sony is a giant in consumer electronics. Sony Walkman series is the best out there. Sony introduced portable media players to the planet. There is a Walkman for everyone’s needs. From big ones with loads of features to headphone like players which can be cling to your ears. Sony has equal alternatives for all range of iPods from the shuffle to the Touch(in terms of size).

Sony Walkman features a strong battery that can hold for a long time. Sony Walkman’s are reasonably priced. The Music reproduction is really awesome. It is as great as the one offered by the iPod. Sony Walkman would be a would be a right choice for you if you plan to change your old iPod.

Turkey Lifts Ban on YouTube

Posted November 1, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

Turkey lifted its Ban on the Popular video sharing site YouTube from Google. Turkey recently banned another video sharing site – Vimeo.

Back in March 2007, a Turkish court ordered YouTube to be banned there because of offensive comments about the founding father of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. This ban was eventually lifted, but videos insulting the the same person caused a new ban after another. YouTube was at last completely blocked in Turkey in May 2008, with the blockade lasting for more than two years.

Turkish Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said that the ban has been lifted as the offending videos were removed from YouTube. He also said “I hope that they have also learned from this experience and the same thing will not happen again. YouTube will hopefully carry out its organization in Turkey within the limits of law in the future” .

[adsense]

But Youtube replied to the Minister’s statement as “We want to be clear that a third party, not YouTube, [has] apparently removed some of the videos that have caused the blocking of YouTube in Turkey using our automated copyright complaint process. We are investigating whether this action is valid in accordance with our copyright policy.”

Whatever it may be, now as the ban has been removed from Turkey, now Turkish users can enjoy YouTube. Cheers to you guys :)

LimeWire Shut Down Permanently

Posted October 28, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

One of the most popular peer to peer file sharing service has been officially shut down today due to the federal court orders.

LimeWire is a free peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) client for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other operating systems supported by the Java software platform. LimeWire uses the gnutella network as well as the BitTorrent protocol.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a case against Limewire for encouraging sharing of copyrighted content through its service. The four year old case came to an end today but this time, Limewire was on the losing side. The court ordered Limewire to shut down searching and sharing of copyrighted content.

The opponents claimed that over 93% of the software’s traffic was made up of infringing content. The RIAA also said LimeWire has cost the music industry hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

They restricted LimeWire from allowing the searching and sharing of copyrighted material. But a LimeWire spokeswoman said the website will continue working with the music industry”.

Alas ! It is now a sad time for P2P lovers, This may be the future for other similiar services too.

Digg Vs Reddit

Posted October 28, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

Since when I came into social bookmarking, I have seen a healthy competition between Digg and Reddit and their corresponding user base. I am one among those neutral guys who try to encourage this competition so that more and more social bookmarking sites may arise leading to the improvement of the total quality of the content produced in the web.

[adsense]

Since many websites fight among themselves to score a good position in Digg or Reddit’s first page. They keep on increasing the quality of the content they produce, so the competition among these websites has lead to the overall development of the internet to a considerable amount.

Let us see a infographic comparing the two sites. We all know who is the leader now, but this infographic does not tries to show you the winner, rather it shows you the statistics. Check it out.

Digg and Reddit users, share your views on this infographic, through the comments.
