Why Does Your Website Load Too Slow ?

Posted May 21, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

If you are a Website owner or a Blogger or a Web Designer then this post is for you.

Some websites and blogs load slow. When a Website loads too slow it means it is losing potential customers, Because in in India and most of the developing countries, Dial up connections are more than Broadband connections, So it is wise to make your blog lightweight and load faster. But How?

[adsense]

A webpage has lots of elements. An image, a widget, a style sheet, all are elements of a webpage. A browser loads all these elements one by one and finally renders the webpage as a whole document. So when we add the time taken to load each element in a webpage, it gives the total time taken to render a webpage.

So if we know which element of the webpage is loading slow, then we can remove it from the webpage, so that the webpage loads faster now.

Google Chrome browser has a inbuilt feature which enables you to check the time taken for each element in a webpage to load.

How to find the time taken for each element to load

1. Open the required web page. Right click it and in the context menu click “Inspect element”

2. The “Developer Tools” dialog box will open. In that select “Resources”.

3. Now in the “Resources” section, select “Only enable for this session” option and click “Enable resource tracking”

4. Now the webpage will load again and Google chrome will tell you how much time does it take to load each element. Based on the results you can remove the elements which take much time to load, so that your webpage loads faster.

Axleration took 26.50 Seconds to load in a 64 kbps connection. I need to tweak my website a little bit, so it loads faster. I will write another article about how to use this resources in a efficient way in the feature. Share your thoughts in the comments section.

People normally can easily update their status using twitter, but when it comes to blogs, forums and websites it becomes a difficult job. You need to write a new article in case of a blog or change your signature in case of a forum. But here are a few ways to display your latest tweet in a clean and neat image form.

1. Twitter Signature Style

Twitter Signature Styles is an online tool which quickly generates a image with your latest tweet and username. This service has a wide variety of styles to choose from. It automatically generates code for easy use.

2. Tweet Bars

Tweetbars is another online tool. It does not provide cool styles and templates for your  tweet, but provides a simple twitter style box which displays your latest tweet. It is much simple to use and you need to just give your username. This service to generate automatic codes for your tweets.

3. TwitSig

Twitsig has one default template and generates your tweets as images. This service too automatically generates code for easy use. The main advantage of this service is it displays your avatar along with your username. Twitsig also allows you to change the dimensions of the generated image.

4. Embed Tweets

There is a more elegant solution for this task. The one that is provided by Twitter. You can embed tweets now, anywhere using the embed code provided by twitter. All you’ve to do is, go to the tweet’s unique url. It’ll be something like this.

Click on a tweet in your news feed, once it expands, you’ll see a link named details at the bottom. Click on it and you’ll be taken to the tweet’s unique url. Once there, you can see a link which says, “embed this tweet” at the bottom.

Once you click it, a pop up will show up where you’ll have options to customize the code. Do the required changes and copy the code and you are good to go.

Scirus – A scientific search engine

Posted May 12, 2010 By Ganesh Babu

If you are doing some scientific research and if you can’t find the meaning of some complex scientific terms using a normal search engine, then try using Scirus. I came to know about this site, when i was surfing around the net. This site is really useful for Students, Teachers and other people who do a lot of research.

Using Google for scientific purposes is one hell of a task. We can use Wolfram Alpha for some complex calculations, but still if we want to search old science journals and blogs which are not optimised for SEO, it is difficult for them to show up in Google Search. So there arises a need for a custom search engine which can effectively search for Scientific content just based on the content of the articles.

Scirus is a search engine dedicated to scientific search. Scirus searches webpages that contain scientific content. Scirus searches about 380 million webpages related to science as of now. You can easily find more information about a scientific term easily using Scirus. Scirus is powered by enterprise search from Microsoft. It ranks pages on a genuine way. Scirus is fast and easy to use and also helps to explore more and more topics related to your search query.

[adsense]

The site also allows you to save your searched queries and their results, so you can save some precious research time and view the results again later.

Update: Sad news guys ! The last time we checked, Scirus was down. We’ll update this post if it is up again. We are on the search for a different scientific search engine. So stay tuned, we’ll write about it once we find something.

Hope Scirus helped you in your research, Try it and share your views in the comments section. If you had any doubts while using it, do let us know through the comments and we’ll help you out.

Facebook Fan Pages are in the rage nowadays for most brands and businesses. On top of providing a platform for them to market their products or services, Fan Pages also comes with an in-built analytical tool to profile your fans, demographics details and interactions on your pages called Facebook Insights. However, the data covered is only limited to fans of the page.

We can overcome that by using Google Analytics instead; a more comprehensive and sophisticated analytics tool. But, it’s not as simple as copy pasting the code onto your page like how you normally do it for websites.

Lucky for us, there’s a solution offered by Facebook Google Analytics Tracker (FBGAT) to facilitate this tracking process on your page. Here are the steps to install Google Analytics to your Facebook Fan Page:

1. Have A Google Analytics Account

If you already have a Google Analytics account, create a new website profile to separately track visits to your Facebook Fan Page. When you’re done with that, Google Analytics will display your tracking code, which looks something like this: UA-1234567-8. Do take note that you do not need to activate the website.

[adsense]

2. Get Codes

Remember the FBGAT that was mentioned above? Now visit that site to generate a custom image code to track visits on each of your Facebook Fan Page.

Here’s what to include in the fields above:

-          Analytics Code: The same tracking code that you received from Step 1.

-          Domain on Analytics: The domain name you created in Step 1.

-          Page Link: The name you would like to call your page.

-          Page Title: This is only for your reference.

After completing the fields, click on “Generate Code” and copy them in full.

3. Install Codes

If you’re not using FBML app for your Facebook Fan Page, please do so. This app allows you to add HTML to your pages by simply editing your Static FBML pages and inserting codes.

Pastes the codes that you got from Step 2 into the box and BOOM you’re done! The tracking has begun but it’ll take about 24 hours to show you some results.

If you have any questions, please drop us a comment!
