Google’s 8-Bit Maps is Their Fools’ Day Prank

Posted April 1, 2012 By Ganesh Babu

Google is known for their Fools’ day pranks, we’ve previously covered various Google pranks. Gmail was one great service announced by Google on Fools’ day. Now this year, Google has come up with something retro, Google Maps in 8-Bit.

[adsense]

Just head on to the Google Maps site and you could see the quest icon on the map, next to the earth and satellite options, click it and you can see Google Maps in it 8-Bit glory. It just feels like browsing a map in a game like Pokemon.

In a short span after the ‘upgraded’ Google Maps went live, Reddit users posted world landmarks and historic sites that could be viewed on the map: the ParthenonArea 51,Mount Everest and many more “Easter eggs.”

Google claims that they have created some special kind of cartridge that would connect an NES to the internet and display Google Maps in 8-Bit. Really funny.

Take a look at this video about how Google made the 8-Bit Maps for NES :P

Last year Google pranked us with Gmail Motion, which stated that Gmail can take certain specific motions as input, that prank went rival and many really believed it.

What do you think about this new Google prank ? Do let us know about it and don’t forget to take a look at Mashable’s Fools’ day prank.

How To: Create Full Width Posts in WordPress

Posted March 26, 2012 By Ganesh Babu

WordPress offers various options while posting. But sometimes we would need to post a full width blog post without sidebars, like in the case of infographics, which are quite big and would be visually appealing if viewed on full-width. A good number of premium WordPress themes and a very few free themes has a built in template for full width posts. If your theme doesn’t have one, then how do you create it ?

[adsense]

Remember, Full width page is different from Full width post. Most themes has the Full width Page template. Now let us go through the steps of creating a full width post template.

Creating A Full Width Post Template

1. Install the Custom Post Templates plugin.

2. Open the “full page.php” file in your themes directory and copy the contents of the file. I have attached a full page template in case you didn’t have it. You can find it at the end of the post.

3. Open your favourite text editor and paste the code there. You’ve got to make a little change here.

4. At the top, replace the “Template Name: Full Width” with “Template Name Posts: Full Width”.

5. You can make other design changes as you please.

6. Save the file as “template-fullwidth.php” and upload it to your themes directory.

You are all set. The next time you post, you’ll find a Full width post template in the  Post Template drop down box in the sidebar of your Add New Post page. You can create several templates as per your needs and the Custom Post Templates themes will display it in your post page.

Hope this little guide helped you, Do share and comment. If you have any problems in the process, do let us know and we’ll help you out.

All said that the Finnish mobile giant was lagging in the smartphone race, but it bounced back with its Lumia series featuring Windows Phone 7. A New File Search Engine – General-Files

Posted February 18, 2012 By Ganesh Babu
We always use search engines for finding informations, product reviews, downloading files and so on. There are certain specific search engines which are targeted at special purposes. File search engines are one of those targeted search engines which aim at searching the files that are uploaded to file sharing websites and are made public. Thus giving access to thousands of user uploaded content.

[adsense]

General-files.com, is relatively a new player in this arena. General-files is basically a file search engine with a huge collection of files, which is used by over 2 millions of around the web. The difference is instead of using number of file sharing websites to download files; you can use General-files.com to download all these things from a single source. General-files indexes over 500 millions files right now, and they still keep on increasing the numbers of files at a faster pace.
You can either find your desired files very easily and quickly without putting too much of your time using categories or by search files menu. Not only general-files is a search engine, it offers multiple download links for downloading a single file for user convenience.  For example If you are looking for movies then -files has a specific movie section for you to look for your desired movies, and once you found your desired movie, then you can easily download it to your computer.
Apart from downloading the files, you can also use other services like advanced free Rapid share downloader so called General-Downloader.com which help you to download the files very quickly using advanced search option, and you can download the files by its popularity using  free file directory  which is also called as General-Catalog.com. Thus the parent company General world offers a plethora of services under one roof.

You can also earn some G-points by sharing the files and in the end you can redeem all those points to get a premium account of general-files. If you want to know more about general-files, just sign up and check it out for yourself and do not forget to share your experience here in the form of comment.

Android as a smartphone can be used to its full potential only with the help of an internet connection, and a web browser acts a window to the world wide web. Though Google had its own browser for computers, it didn’t launch a mobile version of its infamous Google Chrome for mobile devices. The reason is unknown.

But the wait is over. Google Chrome, which is the second most used browser, comes to mobile devices to make its mark. But I would say Google has entered the mobile market too late, while other players like Opera, Dolphin, UCWeb have already secured their positions on the browser market in the Android platform though still many use the stock browser which is very basic until ICS.

[adsense]

Google Chrome is officially available for smartphones and tablets running on Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich. The browser is still in the beta stage and the current version while writing this is 0.16.4130.199

Like the desktop version, Chrome for Android is built for speed and simplicity. Chrome for Android was built from the ground again to suit the needs of the mobile devices. It is as fast as the desktop version and follows the same intuitive features like the pre-loading of the top search results in the background for faster browsing and a lot more.

Chrome for Android also features the Omnibox which acts as both address bar and search box. Chrome for Android comes with the Incognito browsing feature, a new thing on the mobile platform for improved privacy. The interface is simple yet powerful, with syncing features available, you can take your desktop browsing experience with you, wherever you go.

One disadvantage is that, Chrome for Android doesn’t have native flash support. Many other browsers boast about having this feature, but Google hasn’t included this and it is not sure whether Google would strain to add it in the future as Adobe has officially discontinued flash for mobile devices in favour of HTML5.

Chrome for Android is in the beta stage and is available for Android phones and tablets running on Android ICS and can be downloaded from the market. It is not sure whether Google would release Chrome for the iPhone, it would be interesting to see whether Apple would approve it or would prolong it, like in the case of Google Voice.

Stay tuned with Axleration for more information on this. Do share your comments with us and if you’ve used this on your device do share your experiences with us.

Google Honours Charles Dickens by Adding a Doodle

Posted February 7, 2012 By Ganesh Babu

Charles Dickens was one of the greatest English language novelist of the Victorian era. He has authored many a number of poems and novels and my personal favourites are David Copperfield and The Adventures of Oliver Twist. Google has displayed a new Doodle to honour this great novelist on the occasion of his 200th Birthday.

[adsense]

Google honours Great people and important events or festivals by displaying a Doodle dedicated to the particular person/event on its international page or it’s country specific pages. What started as a practice many years ago, when Google displayed a doodle for the first time for the burning man festival on August 30, 1998 has now grown into a Google culture.

Now it is rare to see the original Google logo as Google displays its Doodles more often. Google has a specialized team that creates this Google Doodles. The Doodle 4 Google competitions conducted by Google are well known to us.

The Doodle features a scene from the 19th century and has characters which resemble Dickens’ novel characters. When you click on the logo, it takes you to the books search results for the search term “Charles Dickens”, usually Google will link the doodle to the Search page, I guess this is the first time it has linked to the books search page.

You can see the whole collection of the Google Doodles right from the first one here. To read our articles on Google Doodles, click this link.

Samsung’s Galaxy Ace was a huge hit in the Indian market. It was a mid range Android phone with some good specs and looks and was also priced attractively. The Galaxy Ace has now got a successor to follow its suit, and it will be called as the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus. Samsung has officially announced this.

The new phone doesn’t look very much different from the Galaxy Ace. The original phone was considered to be deeply inspired by the design of the iPhone and a newbie would misinterpret a Galaxy Ace to an iPhone easily and the Ace plus has similar looks, except for the placement of the camera, which is at the centre, compared to the Ace which had it on the left corner.

[adsense]

The Samsung Galaxy Ace plus is bigger than the Galaxy Ace by a few millimetres and it is thinner than the Ace by 0.3 mm. The Samsung Galaxy Ace plus measures at 114.5 x 62.5 x 11.2 mm. and weighs 2g heavier than the Ace at 115g.The screen is 3.65 inches and is .15 inches bigger than the Galaxy Ace.

On the inside, the Samsung Galaxy Ace plus is very much different from the Galaxy Ace, with improved specs. It sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1 GHz single core processor and 512MB of RAM while the Galaxy Ace had a 800 MHz processor with a mere 278 MB RAM. They both have the Adreno 200 GPU. Now the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus will be definitely faster than the Galaxy Ace, which would struggle a lot when working with multiple applications.

The biggest problem with the Galaxy Ace was the internal memory which was a meagre 158 MB,but the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus solves it and comes with a bountiful 3GB of internal memory which can be expanded to 32GB using an external microSD card.

The camera is similar to that of the Galaxy Ace, that is a 5-megapixel AF camera with LED flash. It doesn’t have a front facing camera. Samsung should have added the front facing camera as 3G is becoming increasingly popular in India.

This phone would also come with Samsung Kies Air like the latest Samsung Android phones, for instant updates and Samsung ChatON for staying connected with your friends. It would also have the traditional Google apps that come preinstalled in other Samsung Android phones.

One disappointing thing about the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus is that, it would come with the Android Gingerbread 2.3 Though Google has released the next version of Android, Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung is reluctant to bring it to the mid segment and lower segment Android phones and has reserved it only for its high end models. Samsung hasn’t said anything about a possible ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus.

This phone looks cool and comes with convincing specs for a mid range Android phone. The pricing details haven’t been announced yet. But it is expected to be priced around 15000 INR.

What do you think about this phone ? Do you think it would emulate the success of the Samsung Galaxy Ace ? Share what you think about the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus with us through the comments.

How To: Search Domains across Multiple TLDs Simultaneously

Posted February 4, 2012 By Ganesh Babu

While registering domain names, we would wonder if the domain name is taken in other TLDs or If the .com version of a domain name is taken, we would like to check other TLDs. But it is really a painstaking process to search the availability of a domain name in multiple TLDs.

[adsense]

iwantmyname is a domain registration site, which lets you check the availability of a domain name in more than 90+ popular TLDs. This will considerably reduce your workload. Their domain registration prices are little higher than other industry leaders, but it is a great tool for checking the availability of your brand name.

All you have to do is to head over to the site and enter your required domain name in the text box, located at the centre of the site. Just type it in and click enter, and you will be provided with the results which’ll let you know if the name is taken or not in multiple TLDs. The search results page is simple and neat and has options to purchase the domain name, right from there.

Use this service to check often to know if anyone is misusing your brands name. I’ve recently found a site misusing Axleration’s name and I am gonna take some steps to take that site down now. Hope this article helped you. Stay in touch.
