The two tech giants Apple and Google have been at battle against each other for ages. And it’s the same with their products. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android have strangled each other’s necks a lot of times to establish their supremacy over the other. With the newest iPhone released in the markets, Google heads on to make it’s ongoing Android phone much better than Apple’s iPhone. This kinda battle has been going on for ages. It’s no new to those people out there.

[googleads]

There are a lot of angles through which we can compare these two devices. You can stack up these two devices against each other by comparing the cost or hardware or anything. The list goes on. But Onavo takes a social media approach to differentiate these two devices. This infographic depicts the usage of each social media used both in iPhone or Android. Onavo surveyed 100K mobile owners and bundled up the information into a cool, colorful infographic.

In the mobile world too, Facebook ranks the top place. The Facebook app is used by 90% of the iPhone users whereas on the other hand the Facebook app is held by only 63% of Androiders. Next comes the Twitter part. It is seen that only 22% are using the Twitter app in iPhone. Other on the other hand, 25% of Android users use Twitter app and beat the iPhone users. In my view, the usage of Twitter app in iPhone will considerably increase more as Apple introduced the official Twitter app in the latest iPhone, iPhone 4S. Well, there are a lot of social media apps. Dig into the infographic to know more.

Ice cream sandwich debuts with Samsung galaxy nexus

Posted October 22, 2011 By Aswin Vayiravan

The highly awaited android 4.0-ice cream sandwich is out finally!

It was to be launched way ahead , but Google postponed it in order to pay homage to the big daddy -Steve Jobs, and so it was launched on the 20th of October in a media event at Hong Kong ,though there have been a large amount  of leaks the official launch hit the spot light world wide ,shown below is the all new home screen of Ice Cream Sandwich

The name ice cream sandwich is unique and catchy, there is some thing common to all android OS code names, they are all named after yummy desert items  in alphabetical order

the previous versions of android are

“Cupcake”- V 1.5,

“Donut” – V 1.6,

“Eclair” – V 2.0/2.1,

“Froyo”, – V 2.2

“Gingerbread” – V 2.3,

“Honey Comb” – V 3.0/3.1/3.2(only for tablets)

The currently released  android version is ice cream  sandwich or ICS , the next version of android is code named Jelly Bean!

[adsense]

The first phone to run ICS is the much awaited “iPhone killer” samsung galaxy nexus

Here is the samsung galaxy nexus! :

Before we see the new features of ICS,we shall she the hardware aspect of the galaxy nexus

The Galaxy Nexus features a 4.65-inch 720×1,280-pixel HD Super AMOLED curved glass display,a dual-core 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4460 processor (ARM Cortex-A9) with an accompanying PowerVR SGX540, 1 GB of RAM, a 1,750 mAh battery, 1.3 MP front camera and 5 MP rear camera capable of 1080p video, 4G, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, GPS, Barometer, and NFC  and it has 16 or 32 GB of internal memory.

The phone has no physical buttons on the front, and instead features on-screen soft keys embedded into the system software (part of Ice Cream Sandwich). The 3.5 mm headphone jack is located on the bottom of the phone, and the camera is located in the center of the rear side. The phone will have 16/32 GB internal storage depending on model.

Now let us have a quick look into the features  of Ice cream sandwich

  1. SCREEN GRABBER-The first and foremost feature which we loved about the ice cream sandwich is the native feature to take screen shots of your android screen, though this is a simple feature, it is very useful for bloggers like me, while reviewing android apps, screen shots can be taken by pressing the power and the volume keys, before this process was cumbersome, now phones running on ICS can take screen shots in a jiffy!
  2. LOCK SCREEN-The lock screen has been drastically modified, you can launch apps from the lock screen directly B-)
  3. FACE UNLOCK- you can just unlock the phone by pointing your phone’s front camera to your face, how ever during the launch function, the Google engineer pointed his face and the phone didn’t unlock the first time!
  4. ANDROID BEAM-Google has made use of NFC(near field communication) technology, you can share, pictures, contacts, bookmarks, maps, files etc etc etc to another ICS mobile by just tapping the phones together for a second, click here to see a video on how android beam works
  5. VOICE TYPING-though this feature is already there in previous android releases , this has underwent a major over haul
  6. UPDATED CAMERA APP the camera app opens at once when  you  press the camera button , and takes pictures without any delay, pictures can be taken with the from camera also,
  7. PEOPLE APP- the contacts application has been renamed and has gone through a major over haul, the contacts you have added are displayed in a whole new UI
  8. RESIZEABLE WIDGETS- you can resize widgets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. APP FOLDERS- like the iPhone you can add apps to folders, in order to group them together
  10. BROWSER- Android stock browser is one on the not so nice software that comes with android, but now the browser has been totally redesigned!
  11. DATA USAGE TRACKER- you can monitor the amount of data transmitted over GPRS/3G/4G/Wifi etc , you can restrict the data usage by setting warning messages and trip off limits and save a lot on your bills!

Android App review-Swiss Army Knife

Posted October 18, 2011 By Aswin Vayiravan

Here is an android app review

Android is one of the most efficient and versatile mobile operating system, but there are some features which are available even in cheap china phones but they are not available in Android , but the major advantage of android is the choice of an exhaustive array of applications!,Swiss army knife is one such application, which give remarkable functionality to your android mobile

The real swiss army knife is a tool which contains many sub tools, similarly the swiss army knife android application is a single application and has many sub applications

[adsense]

The swiss Army knife consists of the following tools

  1. Stop Watch
  2. Compass
  3. Calculator
  4. Count Down Timer
  5. Ruler
  6. Bubble level
  7. Flash Light

1)Stop watch

This is one of the most rudimentary features available even in frugal mobile phones, sadly most of the android phones don’t come with a stock stop watch app so we are forced to use paid  apps like ultra chron, swiss army knife’s stop watch  functionality  is excellent , having the other features of swiss army knife application in mind and the cost free application criteria , is a big plus point for this app!

2)Compass

This is one of my favorite applications, all android phones come with an in built magnetometer which can be used as a compass, and the developers of swiss army knife have stricken the right chord by effectively making use of the magnetometer as a compass, It does the job it is intended to do properly!, ie) it points to the north, it will come in handy if you are lost in a lonely desert/forest(JUST JOKING)!, sometimes external magnetic fields may cause the compass to malfunction, in than case wave the phone in a circular pattern and it will be calibrated

3)Calculator

Though android phones have a stock calculator app , they are not up to the mark, Swiss army knife has a calculator, which not only just performs arithmetic calculations but also almost all operations which can be performed by scientific calculators(This will come in handy for those who smuggle phones into exam halls LOL!)

 4)Count down timer

This is one of the apps which is not present in android by default but it is an absolute necessity, the count down timer works flawlessly and even runs in the background.

 5)Ruler

This is one of the features that has failed to impress us,some graduations are displayed on the screen,The ruler is accurate though, don’t know it might come in handy any day!

6)Bubble level

This is the most awesome feature in the entire swiss army knife package, the bubble level can be use to find out whether any surface is flat , or angle, it even displays the angle values, which is really , cool!, but we don’t find any real time practical use for the masses, but its great usage of the motion sensor present in the phone

7)Torch light

My favorite mobile is nokia 1200 , it had an amazing torch light, but high priced android phones dont have them, but this app in the swiss army knife uses the flash of the phone’s camera as a torch light,if your phone doesn’t have a flash, then the screen turns white and brightness is set to maximum , which is mind blowing

VERDICT:

Your android phone is incomplete with out Swiss army knife, click here to download of point your android device to the following QR code

Top 5 Things About the Samsung Galaxy R

Posted September 28, 2011 By Simon

The Galaxy R is touted as a slightly less costly version of the excellent Samsung Galaxy SII. It will be cheaper than the top of the range Android, as Galaxy SII deals can be fairly pricey, but won’t necessarily miss out on many of its excellent features. So, what are its top five best features of the Galaxy R?

[adsense]

Processor

The device is not in the premium league and still manages to get a top of the range dual core processor of a whole 1GHz to itself. This sort of power is excellent for a device of this price and really shows on the phone which has the legs for copious amounts of multitasking among other things. The device is also great for multimedia use and we found it to be more than capable for videos, browsing and work all at once. It also has its own GeForce Graphics chip which adds to the capabilities of the phone massively.

Screen

Though the screen is not the same as the one on the Galaxy SII – the Super AMOLED Plus, it is still an astoundingly good display. The Super Clear LCD has one of the engines Samsung uses in its TVs, the digital natural image engine. This processor creates wonderful bright lag fee images and the only real difference is that it eats up the battery faster than the AMOLED screen.

Shape

The new phone is also quite stylish. It is a little bit wider than the Galaxy SII at 9.5mm deep ad it is also heavier. However, it still looks the business and has a similarity to all Samsung’s with its thin bezel and large screen and simple minimalist features. It is a very tidy and attractive phone and looks great.

OS

The Samsung uses Android 2.3, like the Galaxy SII. It also has TouchWiz system added on to the system to ensure the phone has the Samsung specifics when you are using it. The new TouchWiz user interface is a nicely thought out one and some of the Samsung apps are great, especially when the phone is meant to be orientated towards multimedia. The Android OS is one of the best there is and the phone has every sort of accessory in this area available.

Camera

The camera is also quite good for its size. It’s a 5m and is capable of recording 720p video for playback on the excellent screen. This camera is ideal for most shooting and the dual LED is perfect for illumination at night.

All in all the Galaxy R is only slightly different to the Galaxy SII in terms of appearance, and the only real changes made are to the screen with a switch to Super Clear LCD. This has its benefits as well as drawbacks and the Galaxy R is an equally fantastic phone to the highly popular Galaxy SII, while at the same time being in more people’s reach thanks to its lower price tag, as a Galaxy R contract is expected to cost a fair amount less than a Galaxy SII contract.

5 Best Smartphones for Office Use

Posted August 30, 2011 By James Adams

Like the Swiss Army Knife of the Internet technology age, the smartphone is small, versatile, and efficient. The ideal tool to have in your pocket when lost in the urban jungle or stranded on an IT island, the smartphone can send and receive audio and video phone calls, surf the Internet, receive RSS feeds, send and receive text messages across many different platforms, read and create documents, navigate via GPS, and even take high quality photos or films.

Although it goes without question that ditching your old cell phone for a sleek, new smartphone is a great idea, if you will be using the device mainly for business or office-related purposes, it’s important that you pick the right smartphone and one that will be as helpful as possible. Business-oriented smartphone users have a specific set of needs, and it is crucial that the smartphone you choose caters to those needs.

The five major smartphone platforms are Blackberry, iPhone, Palm OS, Nokia Series 60, and Windows Mobile. Although each has its own strengths and weaknesses, often the clincher that can help you decide on a system will be finding out what the majority of players use in the business markets that you frequent. Because many smartphones often have special features that allow them to more easily communicate with other smartphones of their same brand, buying a smartphone that will allow you to easily get in touch with your partners and be gotten in touch with by them will do wonders for your networking.

Make it clear to yourself exactly what you will need your smartphone to do for you. If creating and editing Word documents while you run around town is essential to you, a smartphone with the Windows Mobile platform will most likely be the best choice for you. If sending and receiving email is dearest to your heart, the Blackberry has one of the most robust email solutions. If multimedia is paramount, you just might fall in love with an iPhone. If you will be away from a charging solution for long periods of time, you will need a device with an extended battery life.

If you plan to be entering a lot of data on your smartphone, make sure to get one that features some kind of QWERTY-based keyboard. Tactile keyboards are often deeply cherished by those who prefer them, but soft keyboards have their own set of fanatic aficionados. Try out both types and see which keyboard is up your alley.

With all the above considerations in mind, here are five of the best smartphones for office use.

Blackberry Curve

Great for email and data input, the Blackberry Curve features a QWERTY-based keyboard and will alert you the second an email arrives in your inbox. The Curve is the most compact and lightweight Blackberry available and works in over two hundred countries around the world. It also features GPS navigation, a high-quality digital camera, and a great multimedia player.

LG Voyager

The Voyager’s high-res touch screen will give you spot-specific tactile feedback when its surface is pressed. If, however, you need a keyboard with actual buttons, this smartphone unfolds to reveal a complete keyboard and another touch screen on the inside. This device also comes with a high-quality 3G Internet connection.

MOTO Q 9h

Besides featuring a QWERTY keyboard and a 3G connection, the 9h is a Windows Mobile smartphone that allows for a high degree of compatibility with all Microsoft Office files. It is also Bluetooth-capable and features an expandable microSD memory slot.

Motorola Droid Pro

This smartphone offers a complete synchronization solution between the device and your office’s calendar and email. The Droid Pro was specifically designed with office users in mind, and it features a complete QWERTY-based keyboard and plenty of useful Android apps.

iPhone 4

Not the mere toy that it used to be, the iPhone 4 is becoming a serious contender on the business smartphone market. The new iPhone features support for Microsoft Exchange, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of apps available to it. If you are unable to find the perfect business solutions among the wealth of apps available for this device, you may simply be impossible to please.
