7 Little Things that My Inner Geek Loves About Windows 8

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been covered extensively over the last few weeks, and there’s a rough consensus about the pros and cons. Metro looks good and it works well for touchscreen use. The desktop is virtually the same as Windows 7, but you may get frustrated using the mouse and keyboard, or looking for the Start button.

I’ve been playing around with Win 8 Consumer Preview for a couple weeks now and I’ve got to say that there are a number of little benefits and important improvements that that should be highlighted. To supplement the usual ‘best things about Windows 8’ lists, I’ve compiled a list of:

Seven Under-Reported Geeky Benefits of Windows 8

#1. It’s Just Faster
One of Microsoft’s main goals with Windows 8 was to create a ‘scalable, device-agnostic’ operating system that could run on nearly anything. Microsoft took a hard look at memory utilization, and came up with a way to cut the ‘memory footprint’ of the OS nearly by half. The result is an efficient use of memory for tablets and a noticeably snappier feel for users of more powerful desktops.

#2. Task Master
If you want to see exactly where this memory is going, you can pull up the revamped Task Manager. Call me geeky, but I really appreciate the thought that went into making the redesigned Task Manager more clean, informative, and downright good-looking than ever.

#3. It’s Refreshing
In earlier versions of Windows, System Restore came in handy when your PC needed a trip back to an earlier, simpler time when things worked better. In Windows 8, the Refresh and Reset options take the concept much, much further. Reset gives you a fresh install, including scrambling empty space on your hard drives (among other things, so that none of your data can be reconstructed after you’ve sold or given away your PC). Refresh is like a fresh install but with all of your system settings and files kept intact. Refresh will also re-install Metro apps, but NOT ‘Windows mode’ programs — like System Restore, you can take a snapshot of your PC when you have everything exactly the way that you like it, and go back to that at any time.

#4. Try Before You Buy
The Windows Store has a little feature that should make Apple and Android very nervous: the Try option. When browsing the Store, users can take an app for a test drive before committing to buying it. Developers will have the option of defining a trial period or limiting features, but Microsoft assures that choosing to buy will allow you to continue right where you left off, with all settings or data (or levels) saved. It’s a far more direct, immediate, and streamlined way of sampling apps than other app markets have to offer.

#5. Mount Up
Remember the days when you had to find, download, install, and juggle third-party tools to mount disk images on virtual drives? Well, Windows 7 began by taking care of the virtual drive problem, but Windows 8 provides a one-click solution that instantly creates a new VHD (virtual hard drive) with the selected ISO, BIN, CUE, or IMG file mounted and ready to roll.

#6. As Much Space as You Need
When it comes to storage, Windows 8 offers new ways to make more efficient use of your storage than ever before. StorageSpaces let you create a virtual hard drive (VHD) which automatically scales to be as big or small as you need it (called ‘thin provisioning’). VHDs can be spread across any or all physical drives (internal, external, HDD, SSD, etc.) in the same way that Windows 7 can look at multiple locations for your Documents, Music, and Pictures folders. Multiple VHDs can also be configured as RAID drives for data redundancy in the case of a hardware failure, and still grow in size as needed without re-configuring the whole setup even when you add new hardware drives.

#7. The Sky’s the Limit
Speaking of storage, Windows 8 gives you cloud storage in the form of your SkyDrive account. ‘Big deal’, you might say, ‘everybody and their mother offers cloud storage these days.’ But in the case of SkyDrive, it comes to a sizable 25GB, and is integrated directly into your system; as far as your OS is concerned, it’s just another folder on your PC, with no extra apps or steps or settings. You can ‘save and load’ from any Metro app and you can drag and drop, even from ‘desktop mode.’ On top of all this, when you sign into SkyDrive, from any device, anywhere; you’ll get secure, protected access to anything stored on your ‘main’ Windows 8 PC (and not just files, but also Metro apps and personalization settings.

5 Easy Exercises for Bloggers Who Spend 10 Hours Blogging a Day

Do you spend ten hours a day in front of your computer and find no time to indulge in some hard core exercises? Do not worry. Here are some easy exercises that you can perform while not leaving your computer seat. Follow them and be the healthy blogger.

Yes, that true. If you want to lose up to 200 calories per day by just sitting in front of the computer, all you have to do is fidget on your seat.

Shake your legs, move your hips and occasionally rotate your hands. Do these activities continuously enough to keep your body thinking that you are moving.

Put on music in your computer and move your body to the rhythm. Considering that you spend nearly 10 hours in front of the computer, you sure can have a lot of opportunity to fidget while sitting on a chair. Add to that healthy meals by Weight Watchers or Bistro MD and you have a perfect weight loss plan. So, optimize on your sitting time and fidget instead of slumping these like a typical couch potato.

So what if you do have time to put in an hour of work out every morning? You can very well put in small pockets of activity all through the day. As a blogger, you surely do a lot of uploads and downloads to do on the computer. So, every time you either upload or download a file, stand up for a few seconds and perform squats, sit ups, lunges or jump on the spot.

Use as much time as file takes to download. If the file is small, allocate ten seconds to your workout. Even if it takes a few minutes, use all the time you have. Essentially, avoid multitasking when files upload or download and use that time for exercise. You can achieve reasonable fitness while still spending ten hours in front of the computer.

If your computer chair is of the rotating type, use the facility. Sit erect and twist the chair such that your entire torso twists with it while keeping the shoulders and face trained towards the computer.

Perform three reps of this routine with ten twists in each rep every hour or couple of hours. Avoid this exercise after having food and make sure that your diet is high in nutrition. Cloud computing is being adopted by businesses and consumers alike, with migration expected to grow faster than ever in 2012. People are beginning to see the cloud as a viable alternative to in-house systems because it is more scalable, powerful and affordable. Here are the major trends which are likely to shape the cloud industry this year.

The approach to the cloud taken by most companies and individuals is not one of uniform usage. This means, in short, that both private and public cloud platforms are being used as adoption increases. The result in 2012 will be that a greater reliance on cloud service management will grow out of necessity, because otherwise this tangled web might be difficult to navigate.

Since anyone with a broadband internet connection can start to use cloud services today, there will be a wider understanding of what cloud platforms should provide and how they might reasonably be expected to operate. This means that businesses will be even more concerned about the type of customer experience which is available through any cloud-based services in which they have invested. The cloud will become the storefront of the digital age, so additional monitoring and measurement tools which judge how well users are responding will be demanded by companies across the globe.

All of these trends essentially boil down to the idea that cloud vendors will be expected to perform much better in 2012 than in previous years, because the level of expertise among the wider business and consumer markets is growing. People are no longer disengaged from the idea of the cloud. In fact, the opposite is true, because many broadband internet users access cloud-based platforms every day, even if they are unaware that they are doing so.

On the Whole , CyanogenMod is pretty cool stuff to give it a try, if u a have one among their compatible list of phone. But CyanogenMod does not hold any responsibility for any type of  damage to phone due to mishandling . What happens next? will any MNC buy CM7 as their own OS ? Will it be a great competitor to the present ICS android? Only time has the answer !

How To: Save a Word File in PDF Format

We often come across a file that has the extension as PDF (portable document file) format.  In order to read the file either you should have a PDF reader or a converter that converts PDF files to word files (you cannot be sure of the contents being changed).Using adobe reader the files cannot be edited as easy you do in MS word.   4. now click File-> Print . Print dialog box appears. In the printer section in print dialog , there is a list box called Name.click that and you will see a option called CutePDF writer. select that CutePDF writer in Name list box. now click ok .
  5. Save us dialog box appears. now give a name for the file and click Save to save the file in required directory. Simple ! you are done.
  6. if you think you will edit file in future, also save the file as Word document ,by clicking file->save as and give name for your document and click ok. Now if u need to edit the file open this word file and work on it and now save using the above stated Cutepdf writer method .

For common people, operating systems could only be three names, namely: Windows, Linux, and Mac. But, actually, there are numerous kinds of operating systems that are available in the market. We are only used to using the three operating systems which are Windows, Linux, and Mac because they are the ones we are most familiar with.
