Explanation of the QR Code

Miles Hall writes frequently about the business world. He is interested primarily in writing about selling businesses.
Today is a digital society, and businesses are turning to social networks, web banners, and online media to centralize their marketing in front of where their audience looms – the internet. With all the competitive marketing clutter, companies now attempt to combine efforts of real world and virtual campaigns, and leading the way in this effort is the new symbol of tangible to virtual connective tissue: the QR Code.
You may have seen the QR code on anything from soda cups to billboards. In fact they’re everywhere: Magazine ads, business cards, gas stations, airline tickets and bus passes, and have even replaced the traditional UPC/bar codes in a growing number of retail stores. Where competition is increasingly fierce for genuine ad space, the QR Code has become a reasonable means to incorporate further information to the consumer while serving as an invitation for them to find out more about a product using their handheld devices.
In the beginning

The QR Code was developed in 1994 by Denso Wave, a subsidiary of the Toyota Motor Corp. Initially conceived for tracking vehicle components during the manufacturing process, the code quickly was adapted for other applications. As cell phones developed into mobile computers, marketing firms began to take advantage of the QR Code in streamlining their conversion funnel, or the process in which consumers see an ad, follow the information to the company website, and complete a purchase. Where once published advertisements would include a unique URL near the bottom of the page, QR Codes suddenly allowed consumers to immediately scan the ad and receive supplementary information on the spot, simply by taking a snapshot of the code with their phone.
How it works

As it is quickly readable from a mere photograph or scanned image, QR Code literally stands for “Quick Response” code. Initially needing a programmed sensor to decode the stored information, recent developments in the code and in modern mobile devices allow it to be utilized by downloadable software, such as this one (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/). The program first recognizes three large squares in the corners of the image, and translates the code to the proper size by orienting them with a smaller, fourth square in the bottom right. It then interprets the remaining black squares, or modules, into the information encoded by the company.
QR Codes are also capable of storing data. Each module can contain up to 255 code words, which are offset by other modules containing error correcting codes to ensure that, despite the angle or even damage to the physical surface of the code, it can be read and interpreted correctly. This ability makes QR Codes ideal for the purposes of tracking products and packages, storing temporary data, and labeling items with a depth of information.
Controversy
Despite the explosion in popularity due to the many useful applications of the QR Code, experts are beginning to tout its risks, most of which are privacy concerns. For example, as the QR Code itself is rather anonymous in presentation, consumers can be unwittingly taken to malicious sites in which they would have never explored had it been given a manual address. There have also been reported cases of malicious packets being downloaded in the background of an otherwise normal looking site. As the QR Code contains data, it is also now possible to simply execute a virus or program just from scanning the image, enabling attackers to have immediate access to all of an unsuspecting user’s permissions and private information.
Why you should incorporate them into your business

Despite patents owned by Denso Wave, QR Codes are free of license, and in 2011 over 14 million Americans used them. Advancements in the code have made them capable of containing useful information in a variety of sizes, and can even be presented aesthetically to match the image of your brand while remaining fully functional. They also draw consumer attention. More likely than not, a large QR Code without explanation on a giant board will pique the curiosity of the consumer enough to scan it, if for no other reason than to discover what is being advertised. Given the ease of access for both consumers and businesses to connect using QR Codes, they are a valuable commodity that should be incorporated into every business model.

Printing Documents From Your Mobile Devices

Posted May 14, 2013 By moniquejones18

It is more sensible and practical for mobile employees to go paperless with the documents they type out and send to various people with whom they do business. After all, there is software to make editing and electronic signing of documents doable even with mobile devices. But there will always be exceptional instances when the need to get documents printed in hard copy form is necessary. Being mobile under such circumstances can therefore be so challenging as to make the mobile employee contemplate rushing all the way back to the office. First, to do some file transferring to a desktop computer. And next, do some conventional desktop printing. But how does the mobile worker go about it when stuck in far-off locations and rushing all the way back to the office isn’t practical?

Documents accessed from smartphones and tablets, in fact, can be hard to read from phone or tablet displays for some people with eyesight challenges. For those with 20/20 vision, however, varying degrees of phone display resolutions and sophisticated technology currently in most smartphones working on various platforms like iOS, Android or Windows may offer amazing viewing convenience. But there will still be documents that can be hard to read via mobile device displays. Such documents posing readability/viewing challenges are:

  1. Important voluminous documents
  2. Multiple spreadsheets with accurate financial figures
  3. Detailed graphs or diagrams
  4. Intricate visual images with minute details

Cloud printing

All of the above illustrate examples of exceptional documents that mobile device users are capable of receiving from senders online in their original file formats. Personal perusal and scrutiny of these require printing out as hard copy to enable subsequent user comment or recommendatory revision possible over such documents. Having such documents printed out when you are in some far-off location can be doable.  There are public cloud-based printing services in existence that allow remote printing from mobile devices like the ones below:

  • Google Cloud Print. The free service draws its strength from its cross-platform printing ability. It can work with any printer brand and any device type as long as they run Google Docs or the Chrome web browser. Printing options fully supporting all printers are made up of two choices. Single or double-sided print, and black and white or color pages.
  • Hewlett-Packard ePrint. Lets users print by sending an email with a document attached. It is free but you need to have a web-enabled printer of Hewlett-Packard make to use the service.

The above services can be availed of for free by users. But there are also paid business-class cloud printing solutions you may consider like Breezy, PrinterOn (serves as public cloud service or internal server software), and PrintMe Mobile (which comes as software installable on Linux or Windows servers).

Considering the Givens…

Mobile workers are resigned to the fact that printing via mobile devices while on the road is not as easy as doing so in the comforts of an indoor office within arm’s reach of printing amenities. But do remember that with your smartphones and tablets, printing still won’t be just as easy as doing so with desktop printers. The procedure involved just isn’t the same. Worry not too much for there are products that can make mobile printing easy if you own a small company or work from home on a virtual set-up. Considering the mobile printing givens we just mentioned, take a quick look at the options below:

  • Apple’s AirPrint. Feature built into iOS 4.2 and later. Enables you to print from an iPad or iPhone wirelessly to a nearby printer. It can work with over 200 kinds of printers.
  • PrintBureau. Third-party app for iPhone and iPad printing. Will print directly to most wireless printers and all printers via a Mac or PC using the free WePrint software. The computer just acts as a relay the moment you tap your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and automatically pass the print job from your device onto the printer without user intervention.
  • HandyPrint. Donationware that runs on a Mac that is connected to a printer to enable wireless printing via iPad or iPhone. Runs compatibly with any printer.

Microsoft to construct fortress to counter computer monitoring software

There are murmurs in the Microsoft camp which are being echoed all across the tech realm that most ‘security programs’ and antivirus which cater to computer monitoring software or cell phone spy software are well, rubbish. Therefore, the word is that Microsoft’s latest operating software would activate a built-in AV (antivirus) software if it senses the PC’s vulnerability with regards to viruses and computer monitoring software.

Windows Defender

The new operating system is dubbed ‘Windows defender’ and it brings together the strengths of its name sake (anti-spying program’s characteristics) and that of Security Essentials – it had up to this point had been a separately downloadable program. Windows Defender was announced in September last year, and with all three of its sneak peeks – Windows 8 Developer, Consumer and Release previews – the Defender was turned on by default. Even so, the word is that things will be different when the latest Windows 8 PCs are unveiled at the tail end of the current year.

Take Your Shot

Third-party dealers and computer connoisseurs are being given the first shot at PC protection to check out all the dynamics keeping the threat of computer monitoring software for PCs and cell phone spy software for cell phones in mind. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) usually use the trial versions of leading antivirus programs on their computers and after the expiration of the trial the owners are then advised to upgrade the programs to the paid editions, which can cost anywhere between $40 to $90 a year. Windows 8 meanwhile conceded the role of the AV to these trials and, would not in any case, activate the Defender if an antivirus program with signature updates was detected.

Oh Crap!

PC makers do profit through the pre-installed software and the antivirus tools. In AV’s case, the OEMs get a share of the pie as far as the payment to security vendors is concerned. The entire practice is dependent on loading computers with an array of third-party apps which are dubbed “bloatware” or “crapware” by the critics. The ‘crapware’ are pivotal in highlighting the chinks in the armour of the defense mechanism, and that in turn aids the security chiefs to devise methods to plug the gaping holes, if they exist.

An Age Old Habit

The fact that Microsoft has decided upon delaying the activation of the Defender in Windows 8 is reminiscent of its maneuvers in the previous versions of Windows. Like when Security Essentials were offered to Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP computers. And then afterwards, Security Essentials had been listed as an option to download via Windows Update on computers that do not have other antivirus software. Even though Windows 8 activates the Defender automatically, Microsoft has a page that lists the existing third-party AVs which would complement the latest OS. This should also help filter out the malware from the various devices and help the users and indeed businesses keep their networks safe and secure

Microsoft has unveiled its new player in the tablet market – surface. With which Microsoft is trying to make a new design statement and a better share in the tablet market. The new Microsoft branded tablet comes packed with a lot of things.

Microsoft Surface runs on Windows 8, which looks too cool in a tablet. It comes in two flavours, one with an NVidia processor and other with an Intel Core i5 processor. The device features an 10.6″ HD display (Hail Retina). It is 9.3mm thick and weighs a little less than a kilo.

The best part is, it has an attachable keyboard (just like the Asus transformer tablet, but much better) and a magnetically attachable trackpad. It also has an integrated kickstand too. It has a magnesium case and comes in around 6 colours (screw iPad).

[adsense]

The magnesium case is manufactured with ”physical vapor distribution” and it has Gorilla Glass 2.0, both of them making the tablet virtually scratch-proof. The keyboard and trackpad are part of the Touch Cover that Microsoft unveiled too, which magnetically attaches to the tablet, making it easy to wear it.

The NVidia version will be running the Windows 8 RT and the Intel version will be running a new specialized version of Windows 8 called as the ”Surface for Windows 8 Pro”.

The ARM variant will be coming in 32 GB and 64 GB models, and the Intel variant will be coming in 64 GB and 128 GB models.

The prices of the devices are not announced yet. However the NVidia variant is expected to be priced less than $699 and the Intel variant to be priced like an Ultrabook at around $1000. It is expected that it will be released before Christmas season.

Microsoft is not so good when it comes to making hardware. Except for their XBox gaming console, which is of course a world leader, their other big ventures on making in-house hardware were big failures. Like Zune aimed at iPods and their Kin mobiles where all epic failures.

This new tablet might be the real competitor for Apple’s iPad. If the price is reasonable and if it comes with a better numbered app store, then it can cause quite a lot damage to the iPad’s market share than Amazon did with it’s less powered and cheaper device, the Kindle Fire.

Take a look at this introduction video of the Microsoft Surface.

Hope you liked Surface. If you are expecting something in this new tablet, let us know through the comments. Subscribe to the newsletter to stay updated on this device.

Google Introduces the Knowledge Graph

Posted May 23, 2012 By Elaiya Bharathi

When you search in Google what you get as results is the webpage related to that but now Google has introduced the knowledge graph. Google’s next frontier in search is to understand real-world things and the relationships among them. The knowledge graph by Google is a huge collection of people, places and other real life objects which are connected to one another.

For example you search for Vincent Van Gogh  on Google, It would show the knowledge graph on the right side of the search results were you get a short info about the person you search his birth and death date, his family and his works. Google also shows other related popular searches of the search you make. The search engine also  highlights facts, photos, and other snippets of information about your search.

[adsense]

If you make a search for a place like Eiffel tower you would get the following on the right side of the search page:

  • Images of Eiffel tower and map showing where Eiffel tower is.
  • Facts and descriptions related to Eiffel tower.
  • Searches related to Eiffel tower, such as other Paris monuments
  • Upcoming events to take place in Eiffel tower
  • Building’s feature like height, architect, phone etc.
Thus Google’s Knowledge graph, lets you know more about your search term  without even leaving the results page. That is less time spent searching. Google Knowledge graph, initially after launch would appear only for certain searches like a place, person or thing. It does not show for searches like videos, companies etc.

Another amazing feature of Knowledge Graph is that in some searches which have two different meaning there would be results about one meaning of the topic in a single page so Knowledge Graph shows some more results related to the other meaning.

Google sources its information of knowledge graph from wikipedia, subject specific resources, from freebase.com and Google search data. Google is trying to be ahead of all search engines by introducing several new and advanced stuff ahead of our time. First it introduced instant search, then it went ahead with search by image and recently Google launched the search plus you feature which added a deep social layer to searches. Now Knowledge Graph has done a good job in integrating search with real world.

Google is rolling out this feature slowly to all its users. Check if you’ve got this by doing a simple Google search.

Share your thoughts and drop your doubts through the comments. It doesn’t cost u a thing, But it motivates us :-)

Coding the Future: Computing Power to the People

Posted April 26, 2012 By JesseMLangley

OpenStack was developed as a way to provide cloud companies of all breeds a path to deploy services and applications on standard computing hardware. The budding Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution was developed over a two-year period in partnership with Rackspace Hosting and NASA. To date, several big-name tech companies have jumped on the OpenStack bandwagon, including Dell, HP, Cisco, Intel and AMD.

[adsense]

More About OpenStack

The solution implements a combination of two open-source code platforms – NASA’s Nebula platform, and Rackspace’s Cloud Files platform – and is compatible with Amazon’s EC2 platform, and is licensed through Apache 2.0. This means that all the code is available for free, and can be used by anyone for development within the cloud. There are three main components of the OpenStack platform: Compute (Nova), Object Storage (Swift) and Image Service (Glance). Nova focuses on infrastructural resources, Swift is more about cloud storage and Glance enables speedy application deployment by providing registration, discovery and delivery services for virtual disk images.

Open Source Code Matters & Cloud Standardization

It’s no secret that the cloud is in desperate need of standards. Cloud technology is growing and evolving at a rapid rate, yet there are no UI or UX standards for the cloud to date. Each cloud app is approached from a seemingly isolated design and functionality point of view. A lack of standards can have devastating effects on the wide adoption of cloud technology. It’s from this vantage point that OpenStack was created.

Ending the Public vs. Private Cloud Debate

The latest release of OpenStack, née Essex, was developed with an increased focus on security. This is a direct result of the widespread critique of the open cloud’s lack of security. The effort to increase security in the open cloud is a sign that the OpenStack community is maturing and becoming more sophisticated in their efforts to make the cloud more stable. Ending the public vs. private cloud debate rests on the ability for the open source community to prove the public cloud is stable. While this may not sway IT professionals from their closed-only approach, it may influence decisions to implement a more hybrid approach to cloud service deployment and management.

Conclusion: Large-Scale Cloud Standards Just Around the Corner

While the OpenStack platform isn’t perfect by any means, it is telling that more and more large-scale enterprise tech companies are adopting it. Most recently, Sony transferred a portion of their cloud service from the Amazon cloud in favor of the OpenStack platform. This says that on some level Rackspace offers a cloud platform with better security. Sony isn’t the only company testing the open source waters at OpenStack. Companies as diverse as Disney, AT&T and CERN, an Eastern European nuclear science group, joined Sony, as well as 140 others. With big names like these joining the open source ranks at Rackspace, it’s clear that cloud standardization is not only important, but it is a reality that is not far off.
