Google Cars Which Drive Themselves
Google Announced today that it had developed cars that drive themselves. Yes, Automated cars are made possible now by Google. This is not the type of project which Google heads in to, but this one is really interesting.
Google’s Automated Cars have been tested for 140,000 miles and of all only one accident occurred and it is too a human error, another car hit the rear end. To Ensure security each car was manned and a driver behind the steering who could take control if something goes bad and an engineer nearby who monitors the hardware and software.
Google’s automated cars used video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic, as well as detailed maps (which Google collect using manually driven vehicles) to navigate the road ahead. This is all made possible by Google’s data centers, which can process the enormous amounts of information gathered by our cars when mapping their terrain.
Google believes that this could drastically reduce the number of human life loss due to accidents by half (which is at 1.2 million now). Google Cars could also reduce the traffic congestion because a computer’s instant reaction time and 360-degree awareness could allow cars to drive closer without dashing other cars. This could also efficiently mange fuel consumption.

actually, the picture displayed is random. These tests were made on a Toyota Prius. I think this automated system could be embedded in any car in the future.
