Left 4 Dead 2 is set during the aftermath of an¬†apocalyptic pandemic, and focuses on four survivors fighting against hordes of the infected, who develop severe psychosis and act zombie-like. The survivors must fight their way through levels, interspersed with¬†safe houses that act as¬†checkpoints, with the goal of reaching a rescue vehicle at the campaign’s finale.

The gameplay is procedurally altered by an¬†artificial intelligence engine dubbed the “Director” that monitors the players’ performance and adjust thescenario to provide a dynamic challenge. Several new features have been introduced: new types of infected,¬†melee weapons, and a story-arc that connects the game’s five campaigns together.

2. Resident Evil 5

Chris Redfield, hero from the original Resident Evil game, is back in Resident Evil 5. Set 10 years since the events of the first game Resident Evil 5 takes place in a fictionalized west African region. Chris and Sheva Alomar are on a mission to capture an arms dealer before he is able to sell a bio weapon on the black market. Along the way they encounter scores of parasite infected zombies know as Majini.

There are four game modes: a single-player mode in which allied characters are controlled by AI; a four-player, co-op campaign mode; an eight-player online versus mode; and a four-player survival mode.

In all modes, an¬†artificial intelligence (AI), dubbed the “Director”, controls level pacing and item placements, in an attempt to create a dynamic experience and increase¬†replay value.

4. BioShock

Set in an¬†alternate history 1960, the game places the player in the role of a plane crash survivor named Jack, who must explore theunderwater city of¬†Rapture, and survive attacks by the mutated beings and mechanical drones that populate it. The game incorporates elements found in¬†role-playing and¬†survival games, and is described by the developers and Levine as a “spiritual successor” to their previous titles in the¬†System Shock series.¬†The game received overwhelmingly positive reviews, which praised its “morality-based” storyline,¬†immersive environment and its unique setting, inspired by¬†Objectivist philosophy and rhetoric.

5. System Shock 2

The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a lone soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first person shooting and exploration.
