What Happened to Facebook Mail – Everything Explained

Recently there was a lot of buzz around the new facebook mail. Many techies blogged that facebook mail will sweep off Gmail. When we expected facebook mail to roar today, It came out today with a small meow.

But Facebook mail is not totally false, but it is not as big as we expected. All facebook users will get a @facebook.com address. But it is not actually email, but a few improvements have been done to the existing messaging system in facebook.

When you want to contact a person, you use cell phones or facebook messages or email or through chat, but a few uses only a few of these. So to bring all your conversations to one spot, facebook has done something new. All your conversations will be bought into your social inbox arranged as conversations, based on people and not on subject titles.

Now people can share with friends over email, whether they’re on Facebook or not. To be clear, Facebook Messages is not email. There are no subject lines, no cc, no bcc, and you can send a message by hitting the Enter key. It is modeled closely to resemble chat and reduced the number of things you need to do to send a message.

Messages is built for communicating with your friends, so it made sense to organize primarily around people.  All of your messages with someone will be together in one place, whether they are sent over chat, email or SMS. You can see everything you’ve discussed with each friend as a single conversation.

Since the whole conversation categorization is based on people, it can be done more effectively and will help you keep track of everything and communicate much effectively than before.

In the traditional email system, you cannot control who send you a mail, anyone on the planet, who knows your email id can send anything to you. But in Messages you can control who sends you messages, you can set your privacy to ‘friends’ alone, so that a message from your friend does not go unnoticed among spam mails. So now with Messages you control what enters your inbox.
