RAID, an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks . It’s a technology that provides increased storage functions and reliability. It combining multiple disk drives components into a logical unit where all drives in the array are linked to one another. In many computers we have few hard drives , but if we peep into disk management utility , we can see that there are multiple logic drives ( a single drive is split into many partitions , and system can recognize it as individual drives).
Basically there are 5 levels of RAID , but many variations has evolved now and several combinational RAIDS are developed for convenience. Let me try to some explain Basic levels of raid .
RAID0 : We would have stored all the data in a single drive , any failure in drive leads to loss of whole data . And also if your data occupies a too large space , you would find difficulty in storing all in a single drive . At that time , you can use RAID0 .When data is written to a RAID 0 volume, the data is broken into fragments called blocks. The number of blocks is dictated by the stripe size. The blocks are written to their respective disks simultaneously on the same sector.The greatest advantage of this is speed. But , we face a disadvantage of losing the access of data , even if one of the drive fails.
RAID1: Data is written identically to multiple disks . That is a copy of data is copied to one more drive , so if any drive fails , data is safe and secure in the another drive.
RAID10 : This combines both raid0 and raid1 . It has 2 disks , with each disk having 2 drives. the data is both fragmented and copied in these disk. It gives the advantage of having both speed and security.
RAID5 : Using different disks is a cost consuming one . So you can make the data fragments stored in sequence along different drives.It distributes parity along with the data and requires all drives but one to be present to operate.This helps you to regain the data even if one of the drive fails and cost efficient to.
RAID6: It is similar to 5 but uses not one parity, but two. So even 2 of your drive fails , you can recover your data.
RAID5 and RAID6 has the speed of RAID0 and security of RAID1.
These are some of the basic RAIDS , many more raids are available . It mostly used as a storage solution and does not replace backups.
